Apple’s naming convention lowers my expectations
I believe that the reason Apple dropped the number convention from the “new iPad” is because we are going to start seeing incremental improvements instead of radical changes. This is the way the traditional PC products and their iPod line have been. I don’t think this is very encouraging for those who expect huge things during each apple press event as yearly updates may be more like the boring spec refreshes we see with iMacs and Macbooks. The new naming is causing a lot of confusion and they have to be looking at this as important for the long term because they would never introduce this level of confusion without a plan.
The iPad has now caught up on all the major asks people have had. It has 4G, people can’t expect a faster connection for many many years. It already has a screen with a higher resolution than the majority of desktop monitors. From here on out I think we just see spec bumps, the occasional form factor change, more battery life but nothing revolutionary, but I sure hope I’m wrong.
